All my lifetime it was there – Paul Lambeth

Access info

This selection of photographs from Ballarat East dates from a 1992 National Trust of Victoria funded heritage project – the first of its kind undertaken in Australia. The National Trust’s intent was to probe whether the significance criteria for heritage aligned with community understandings of heritage value. The original photographs were taken on a 5×4 inch view camera and printed on silver bromide paper. A large-scale single edition book was produced with these photographs presented alongside poems by Linda Blake. The photographs highlight substantial changes in one of Australia’s most significant colonial era urban areas.

Ballarat-based artist Paul Lambeth completed undergraduate studies in Art/Photography at Prahran CAE and MA (Research) at the University of Ballarat (now Federation University). He has broad experience in photography practice, including studio, architectural and medical photography. Throughout his career as a photographer, educationalist, and festival director, he has maintained a creative visual arts practice through selective exhibitions and publications. Across Victoria’s Midwest, we acknowledge that we travel across the ancient landscapes of many First Peoples communities.

These lands have been nurtured and cared for over tens of thousands of years and we respect the work of Traditional Custodians for their ongoing care and protection.

We recognise the past injustices against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in this country. As our knowledge grows, we hope that we can learn from their resilience and creativity that has guided them for over 60,000 years.

As we invite people to visit and explore Victoria’s Midwest, we ask that alongside us, you also grow to respect the stories, living culture and connection to Country of the Ancestors and Elders of our First Peoples.
