Open Gardens Victoria will open ‘Craigie’, a stunning City of Ballarat garden for the first time.

‘Craigie’ is the beautiful home (circa 1860s) and expansive garden of owners David and Maria Cook. Located in the historically and architecturally significant precinct of Soldiers Hill, the entire suburb is covered by a City of Ballarat Heritage Overlay. The gardens harmonise with the heritage home, creating a perfect blend of history and nature. Visitors will appreciate the balance of practical, aesthetic, and timeless elements throughout the garden.

In early 2019, large parts of the front and north side garden and rear courtyard were updated and renovated by award-winning local landscape designer and television host Paddy Milne. The goal was to create a visually striking garden with multiple spaces for relaxation and contemplation, while also emphasizing environmental sustainability and maximizing the production of organic produce.

The design balances aesthetic appeal with practicality, blending beauty and function to create a serene yet productive outdoor space. A secluded, private courtyards provides a peaceful escape with stepping stone pathways connecting the different spaces.

Across Victoria’s Midwest, we acknowledge that we travel across the ancient landscapes of many First Peoples communities. These lands have been nurtured and cared for over tens of thousands of years and we respect the work of Traditional Custodians for their ongoing care and protection.

We recognise the past injustices against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in this country. As our knowledge grows, we hope that we can learn from their resilience and creativity that has guided them for over 60,000 years. As we invite people to visit and explore Victoria’s Midwest, we ask that alongside us, you also grow to respect the stories, living culture and connection to Country of the Ancestors and Elders of our First Peoples.
