Abstractions Of Distinction by Russell Drever

Russell has lived in Moonambel since 2000, and his abstract work reflects his love of the harsh natural beauty of his valley. Russell's artwork has featured in many group exhibitions. From 1971 to 2025 he held 15 solo exhibitions. His works are included in permanent collections such as the John and Sunday Reed Collection, National Bank Collection, and various private collections.

Born in Melbourne, Russell attended the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology from 1963 to 1965, where he worked and was influenced by the ideas and professional approach to art of George Baldessin. After exhibiting at the Museum of Modern Art Melbourne in the group show Young Minds in 1963 and New Generations in 1965, he left for London where he worked until 1968.

During his time abroad, Russell drew strong influence from the paintings of the New York School, especially Rothko and Pollock. His European experience deepened his passion for working in rich colour, and at his 1989 Paris exhibition at Galerie Cannibal Pierce.
