In the 1800s, Ballarat was home to the first licensed distillery in the colony of Victoria to produce both whisky and gin—its spirits winning international acclaim and setting a legacy that endures today.

Celebrate this proud history with an exclusive masterclass at Kilderkin Distillery - Ballarat's first modern-era distillery. The two-hour masterclass will cover the history of distilling in the region accompanied by tastings that reflect days gone by.

You will: Enjoy a welcome drink on arrival, Learn the history of distilling with a focus on Ballarat, Have a tour of Kilderkin's stills and learn why stills are still made in much the same way today, Enjoy tastings that reflect the different eras of distilling spirits, accompanied by local cheeses made using traditional methods.

This is a rare opportunity to experience the region's distilling story firsthand, told with authenticity, passion and a generous splash of Kilderkin spirit.

It is also World Whisky Day - that's two reasons to celebrate and discover!

Across Victoria’s Midwest, we acknowledge that we travel across the ancient landscapes of many First Peoples communities. These lands have been nurtured and cared for over tens of thousands of years and we respect the work of Traditional Custodians for their ongoing care and protection.

We recognise the past injustices against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in this country. As our knowledge grows, we hope that we can learn from their resilience and creativity that has guided them for over 60,000 years. As we invite people to visit and explore Victoria’s Midwest, we ask that alongside us, you also grow to respect the stories, living culture and connection to Country of the Ancestors and Elders of our First Peoples.
