Victorian Queens explores Melbourne's unique drag community through four very intimate and distinct portraits. The four drag artists profiled, Lady Diamond, Aysha Buffet, Zodiac and Art Simone, all hold a unique place in Melbourne’s diverse drag scene. The film showcases their progressive leadership through artistic expression while they push for cultural change and inclusion.

After the screening, we will have a panel discussion with co-director Joseph Gardener.

Victorian Queens is a free event supported by the City of Ballarat.

Victorian Queens was recently shown as part of ACMI's Drag Week. The ACMI Curator’s note was: Joseph Gardner and Andrew Cox’s celebratory documentary highlights what makes Melbourne’s drag community so special. Through these very different performers and their experiences we come to understand the importance they hold in elevating voices that champion the scene's commitment to diversity. The inspiration for the documentary was born out of the filmmaker's shared admiration for Jennie Livingston’s cult documentary Paris is Burning (1990), adopting that film's observational, verité aesthetic as we explore the queer spaces and geographies that they live and perform in.

Across Victoria’s Midwest, we acknowledge that we travel across the ancient landscapes of many First Peoples communities. These lands have been nurtured and cared for over tens of thousands of years and we respect the work of Traditional Custodians for their ongoing care and protection.

We recognise the past injustices against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in this country. As our knowledge grows, we hope that we can learn from their resilience and creativity that has guided them for over 60,000 years. As we invite people to visit and explore Victoria’s Midwest, we ask that alongside us, you also grow to respect the stories, living culture and connection to Country of the Ancestors and Elders of our First Peoples.
